Steyerberg operations
The innovation that drives EGA Leichtmetall’s future
EGA Leichtmetall’s new plant is being built at the industrial site GreenTec Park Steyerberg. The park's vision: to bring sustainable growth, economic strength and technological innovation together under one roof.
For us, it is the ideal location – a site where energy supply, resource efficiency, and future hydrogen use are the base of infrastructure.
Once operations begin, production will take place in fully enclosed halls to minimise external emissions and noise and ensure stable process conditions inside.
At the heart of the plant is an integrated technology set-up: advanced scrap sorting system, energy-efficient melting and furnace technologies, and an integrated salt slag breakdown process. Having all this technology under one roof makes this plant one of the most advanced in the world.
In scrap processing, we use X-ray-based sorting systems (XRT), laser line sensors (LIBS) and AI-supported analysis. This enables even more complex post-consumer scrap to be separated by alloy and impurities and fed directly into the process.
In the melting plant, rotary melting furnaces with precise temperature control are used alongside conventional furnaces to reduce material losses and ensure consistently high metal quality. The salt slag breakdown process closes the loop: the salt used in the melting process is recovered from the slag and returned to the process, while ceramic aluminium oxide is separated out as a recoverable secondary raw material. Combined with the use of renewable electricity*, waste heat recovery and largely automated material logistics, the result is a site designed for high efficiency, low greenhouse gas emissions and near-zero waste processes.
