Aluminium for aerospace applications
High-performance aluminium billets produced in Germany for precision aerospace manufacturing
In aerospace manufacturing, material performance is critical to safety, efficiency, and operational success.
Aluminium is used across the sector for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and machinability - making it a material of choice for structural components, fan cases, hydraulic tubes, and other precision-engineered parts in aircraft.
Beyond these applications, aluminium alloys are essential in space technology, where they are used for satellite structures, payload enclosures and launch vehicle components. Aluminium alloys’ proven ability to withstand extreme conditions - such as intense vibration during launch, exposure to radiation, and dramatic temperature fluctuations - supports performance reliability in outer space.
Consistency across production batches is key to meeting stringent aerospace certification and performance requirements. EGA Leichtmetall combines decades of expertise with the flexibility to deliver high-quality, large-diameter aluminium billets, precisely engineered for demanding applications and customised to each customer’s needs.
Our products are manufactured in accordance with our EN 9100:2018 certified aerospace and defence industry quality management system. Ideal alloy families for aerospace applications include:
Continuous casting for uniform microstructures in aerospace products
At EGA Leichtmetall, we produce high-strength aluminium billets through continuous casting, ensuring uniform microstructure, superior mechanical properties, and reduced defect rates compared to conventional ingot casting. Our billets are manufactured using 100 per cent renewable electricity* and contain around 80 per cent secondary aluminium on average, supporting sustainability objectives without compromising performance.
We can produce billets up to 1,080 mm in diameter, enabling the machining of large, complex aerospace components such as rings, disks, and structural frames. Our rigorous quality assurance includes multi-stage sampling and metallographic analysis. Every batch undergoes chemical composition analysis and hydrogen measurement to ensure compliance with sector-specific standards. Where required by aerospace specifications, billets also undergo ultrasonic inspection to ensure they meet the highest industry standards.
We work closely with aerospace manufacturers to select alloys and process parameters that balance strength, fatigue resistance, and machinability for each specific application.
*procured from renewable electricity suppliers via the public grid, verified through Guarantees of Origin that are cancelled in the German Federal Environment Agency's Registry.
