30 years of aluminium recycling, transforming scrap into high-quality alloys

For over 30 years, we have focused on aluminium recycling, transforming scrap into high-quality alloys.

Our operations are powered by renewable electricity* and we actively work to improve our processes to reduce waste and emissions.

EGA Leichtmetall is certified to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Performance Standard, a globally recognised framework developed by industry, civil society and end-user brands to define good environmental, social and governance practice in aluminium production.

Recycling aluminium for a sustainable future

Recycling delivers aluminium with much lower energy use and resource demand than primary production. EGA Leichtmetall delivers high-quality alloys engineered for demanding applications.

More than 80 per cent of our input material is secondary aluminium. All scrap is properly separated and processed by scrap management companies, who we qualify through their ISO certifications and our own audit process, including the recovery of aluminium from dross.

We also return our own production scrap and chips directly to the melting process, helping to further reduce waste and improve resource efficiency.

Using secondary aluminium requires up to 95 per cent less energy than producing new primary aluminium globally, according to the International Aluminium Institute.

100 per cent renewable electricity

We use inductive melting technology powered entirely by electricity. Since 2022, 100 per cent of this electricity has come from renewable electricity suppliers via the public grid, verified through Guarantees of Origin that are cancelled in the German Federal Environment Agency's Registry.

In addition, we participate in the ENGIE Germany Energy Efficiency and Climate Protection Network (IEEKN) to exchange best practice and identify opportunities to improve our energy management. We monitor and optimise our electricity consumption, along with the gas primarily used to operate our homogenisation furnaces, aiming to improve our energy efficiency further. Our production processes include specialised channel induction furnaces designed to minimise energy use.

Social responsibility

At EGA Leichtmetall, sustainability extends beyond environmental responsibility. It is also about our people and the communities around us.

We are committed to providing fair and secure working conditions, in line with the IG Metall collective agreement. This includes regulated working hours and flexible arrangements. Occupational health and safety are important to us and are supported by regular training, relevant certifications such as ISO 45001, and ongoing measures to address workplace risks.

We promote diversity and equal opportunities within our workforce. Our remuneration practices are guided by applicable standards and our commitment to non-discrimination. Our workforce has an average employee tenure of 12 years.

Professional development is supported through a range of training opportunities, including on-the-job, near-the-job, and off-the-job formats. Open dialogue is encouraged via regular staff consultations and feedback mechanisms.

In the wider community, we support local initiatives and contribute to regional development through donations and partnerships.
