New Horizon

The next chapter in European aluminium recycling

Project New Horizon, our new recycling plant in Steyerberg, is EGA Leichtmetall’s largest investment to date and a defining step towards the future of aluminium recycling in Europe.

With this new high-tech recycling plant at the GreenTec Park Steyerberg, we are substantially expanding our capacity. The project New Horizon reflects our ambition: setting new standards in circular-economy aluminium production in Europe. The investment of around €145 million is a clear commitment to aluminium recycling and to industry in Germany.

The new plant combines state-of-the-art sorting technology, energy-efficient furnace systems and an integrated salt slag breakdown process, all under one roof. This will make our operations in Steyerberg near-zero waste and amongst the most efficient in the world.

For the first time, we will be able to sort and metallurgically process post-consumer scrap to a standard previously only achievable with clean, pre-sorted pre-consumer scrap. For EGA Leichtmetall this means recycled aluminium made with post-consumer scrap can be considered for demanding applications as never before. This allows access to new market segments where demand for high-quality, low-carbon alloys is rising. Additionally, it supports a greater security of supply for German industries.

The Steyerberg location will be operated as a dedicated site alongside our Hanover plant. While both locations are jointly managed and designed to create synergies, they will run as independent operations. By blending feedstock from Steyerberg with our existing Hanover production, we are strengthening our overall set-up for customers.

“With the new plant in Steyerberg, we are making a deliberate commitment to the region. We are creating around 200 jobs, supporting local service providers and building supply structures that keep value creation within the area.

What matters to us is a reliable, long-term presence at this location – as a partner for regional businesses and a new neighbour that seeks to engage with the people who live here.”

– Harm Lange, CFO EGA Leichtmetall

What this means for our customers:

The new plant broadens what we can offer: more product variants, competitive pricing, higher volumes and aluminium with a significantly reduced carbon footprint. Shorter supply chains reduce transport time and create flexibility, so we can respond faster to the needs of European markets and deliver high-quality aluminium with greater reliability and security of supply.

What this means for the Hanover region:

The new plant creates around 200 qualified jobs in a sector that is growing in both scale and strategic importance. With an investment of €145 million, we are making a clear commitment to Lower Saxony as an industrial location by fostering skilled employment, strengthening local expertise and demonstrating that Germany remains an attractive location for industrial investment. More aluminium scrap generated by consumers in our region will be recycled into valuable products.

What this means for our people:

A project of this scale needs people who want to actively shape it. The new plant opens up new roles across technology, operations and engineering – and with them, real opportunities to grow within a team that is leading a new chapter. We are investing not just in machinery and processes, but in expertise, in collaboration and in a working environment where people and innovation develop side by side.
