EGA Leichtmetall supports initiatives with a social and environmental focus in Lower Saxony
Hanover, 13 July 2026 – EGA Leichtmetall is deeply rooted in the region, looking back on more than 90 years of history in Hanover. Therefore, the company, which specialises in large-diameter, high-strength hard alloy aluminium billets, actively supports local projects that benefit the region and Lower Saxony. This year, EGA Leichtmetall is supporting four projects: Alongside the ASB 'Wünschewagen', it is now also funding the rewetting of Oldhorst Moor, the initiative 'Fischotterschutz ' and the 'Werdet Harz-Helfer' initiative for the reforestation of the Harz Mountains.
"Our company has been rooted in Hanover for over 90 years," says Thomas Witte, Managing Director of EGA Leichtmetall. "We take responsibility for our region and therefore support initiatives that make a real difference locally and across our state. For us, social and environmental commitment go hand in hand. We support projects that deliver impact on both levels."
On site for people, nature, and species conservation
For the third consecutive year, EGA Leichtmetall is supporting the ASB 'Wünschewagen' (Wish Wagon). The initiative fulfils a long-cherished final wish for people in the final stages of their lives – whether it’s a family celebration, a trip to the seaside, or a return to their hometown. “EGA Leichtmetall has been supporting us for several years now, and this reliability makes a real difference. Thanks to partnerships like this, we have already been able to accompany terminally ill patients on their journeys of choice 67 times this year alone. And in doing so, we have helped make saying goodbye a little easier for our guests. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to EGA Leichtmetall for their valuable support,” says Julia-Marie Meisenburg, project manager at the ASB-Wünschewagen in Lower Saxony.
When it comes to nature conservation, EGA Leichtmetall supports the restoration of the Oldhorster Moor, a project run by BUND in the Hanover region. Thanks to the funded measures, the peatland is gradually being restored to a stable, near-natural state. The ecological condition of the peatland is of great importance for regional drinking water extraction and has a significant impact on the reduction of CO₂ emissions, as peatland can sequester large amounts of carbon. “In numerical terms, EGA Leichtmetall’s funding saves around 30 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. This corresponds to the emissions from around 190,000 kilometres driven by cars. This sends a strong signal from the region, for the region,” explains Claudia Gundert-Fröhlich, spokesperson for the BUND Hanover Region’s Burgwedel/Wedemark local group.
In addition, EGA Leichtmetall supports the initiative Fischotterschutz e.V. via Naturpartner Deutschland. The initiative is committed to protecting the otter, which is classified as a threatened species in Central Europe. Matthias Geng, a board member of the initiative, makes it clear: “The otter is a symbol of ecologically intact aquatic ecosystems. Our work therefore also focuses on the animals’ habitats and, consequently, on the sustainable development of our environment. That is why we are all the more delighted to have EGA Leichtmetall on board as a partner.”
Through a tree sponsorship scheme covering 600 trees, EGA Leichtmetall is also committed to the reforestation of the Harz Mountains. Together with the 'Werdet Harz-Helfer' initiative, new trees are being planted there to transform the forest areas – which have been severely damaged by climate change, storms and bark beetles – into a stable mixed forest. “The reforestation of the Harz is a long-term undertaking. EGA Leichtmetall’s support is helping to transform the damaged forest areas into resilient and climate-adapted mixed forests,” said Malte Heinemann, Managing Director of the fit4future foundation Germany.
These four projects reflect what has defined EGA Leichtmetall for over 90 years: its close ties to the region and its conviction that entrepreneurial activity and social responsibility go hand in hand.
